about fifth freedom

On January 6th 1941, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his State of the Union address, proposed the Four Freedoms -- four fundamental rights that all people throughout the world should be entitled to enjoy: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, freedom from fear. (I know, I know -- you thought this was a personal style blog... we're getting to the good stuff, I promise.)

I was lucky enough to attend a pretty great summer camp in rural Vermont that took these ideals to heart, in addition to adding their own: fifth freedom -- the freedom to wear what you want, when you want. After seven summers as a camper and five on staff, I guess you could say the concept stuck, and here I am today: determined to get dressed with that little mantra in mind.
