A brighter day

jacket: banana republic, gift (thanks, ma!) // turtleneck: f21 // skirt: thrifted, CA // booties: thrifted, CA // bag: urban outfitters // scarf: thrifted, CA // hat: urban outfitters // belt: f21

Ugh, team -- I've been waylaid with the flu, and just looking at these pictures makes my head hurt and fills me with questions: Why was it so bright out when we took these? (Because it was noon on a sunny day.) How did I ever manage to wear anything other than pajamas? (Because, at some point not that long ago, I didn't have a temperature of 101.) Will I ever be able to get out of bed? (Yes... right? Like, I won't just have the flu forever... right? Right?)

As you can probably tell, I'm a little delusional today. Time to wrap this up and get back to watching Suburgatory on Hulu... which has less to do with the fact that I'm sick, and more to do with my (already well documented) love for a good teen drama/comedy, if I'm being honest.

And, please excuse my wrinkly skirt! I know I can't really logically blame that on being sick, but... that's what I'm going to do, anyways. Having the flu is the worst! Fever, sore throat, wrinkled pencil skirts...

Peacock o'clock

boots: steve madden // socks: ?? // skirt: jcrew via thrift, CA // belt: thrifted, VT // sweater: h&m via thrift, CA // scarf: ?? // earrings: street vendor, CA // louisiana tote: gift, thrifted VT

After breaking up with wearing earrings about a year ago, I think it's safe to announce that we're getting back together, and it's pretty serious. My first time around with super-short hair, I was all about them -- I loved the way big earrings looked in contrast to what was basically a buzz-cut. But, after I cut off my locks again, I just wasn't into the look. That is, until this past week. Now I can't get enough of them! Does that ever happen to you -- after forsaking a certain style or color, you wake up one day and find yourself enamored?

To balance out the boldness of these peacock feathers, I decided to keep things pretty neutral throughout the rest of my outfit. I've leaned pretty heavily on dark blues and browns thus far in this 30, so for my next few outfits I'm planning to get back to my colorful roots. Stay tuned!

Barry Manilow, the showman of our time

gray t: gap, old // skinnies: ambiance // cardigan: gap via thrift, CA // shoes: thrifted, CO // earrings: ?? // scarf: thrifted, CA // bag: thrifted, CA // earrings: h&m, old

Up until about a year ago, this was my go-to uniform (minus the giant bag). Whether I was off to work, out with friends, or running errands, I could almost always be found in some iteration of this look. Today, I wore it for what I think is its true purpose -- a harried run to the grocery store before hopping on the couch to (re)read "Perfect Fifths," the final installment of my absolute favorite teen lit guilty pleasure, the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty. I don't want to hear any literary snobbery -- don't pretend you haven't read them. Or, if you really haven't, I guess the title of this post will make significantly less sense, unless you're a big Barry Manilow fan? Either way -- you're welcome.

If I had any doubts about swapping in this cardigan for my navy one, they've been assuaged after today. Two moss cardigan outfits, in a row? Hold on to your hats -- we're just getting started.

Moss > Navy

scarf: thrifted, MA // sweater: thrifted, CA // dress: urban outfitters // socks: h&m, old // boots: steve madden // heart necklace: ? // stone necklace: f21 // belt: thrifted, VT // bag:, urban outfitters

After staring at my 30-30-30 picks for about 45 minutes and bemoaning the fact that over 50 percent of them are navy (well... no, but it feels like it), I made a hard decision: I swapped out my (thus far, unworn) navy cardigan for this moss one. Yes, it's sort of similar to the yellow one, and yes, I do in fact have another cardigan in almost the exact same color (currently sitting in the closed-off section of my closet, calling to me, just like the rest of my other clothes), but... sometimes, you have to listen to your heart when [a cardigan] is calling for you.

I wore this to my niece's birthday party today, who just turned two years old. And, if you ask her how old she is, she will say: "twoooooooooooooooooooooooooo," which is the best. She's also added "story," "please," "thank you" and, my personal favorite, "Shh-ah" (for Sarah, my other niece) to her vocabulary. Toddlers! So good. Also, can we talk about how long and curly my hair is getting? Aw yiss. Today is a good day.

Ruby shoes

jacket: gift (thanks, ma!), banana republic (old)  // stripes: h&m via thrift, CA // skirt: jcrew via thrift, CA // shoes: payless // scarf: thrifted, MA // necklace: borrowed (taken) from my mom (thanks again, ma!) // bag: new! urban outfitters, mega-sale

While taking a quick break from work on an afternoon walk yesterday, I stumbled across this... weird sculpture and/or dumping ground for metal bars (?). I've got no idea what's going on here, but it made for a great location for pictures -- so, thanks for that, Oakland.

How have I only managed to take seven pictures during this 30? I swear, I've worn more like two weeks worth of 30-approved looks --  I guess that trip to Vegas threw me off my game. So, not only have I broken the no-shopping ban, I'm also failing at the thirty days part, too? Yeesh. Get it together, self!

Simplicity

sunnies: prague street vendor // t-shirt: thrifted, CA // necklace: f21 // cardigan: urban outfitters // bag: thrifted, CA // skinnies: ambiance // booties: gap via thrift, CA

A casual outfit, worn while seeing friends for some serious pizza eating and West Wing watching (currently streaming on Netflix; you're welcome, world), which is how I spent my MLK day. I also returned some online purchases to Urban Outfitters that didn't work out quite right, and maaaybe bought some boots. That I've had my eye on for weeks. And a bag. That was half off the sale price. No regrets, but I'm not doing so great with the part of the 30 that says to quit buying more stuff. Oops?

Thanks for snapping these pics, Peebers!

Sunflower

11813-a earrings: oakland farmer's market? // lace shirt: zara // yellow cardigan: express, gift (thanks, ma!) // belt: thrifted, VT // bag: thrifted, CA // skirt: thrifted, CA // boots: steve madden via macy's

Phew -- it's been awhile! I somehow managed to take no useable photos over the weekend, so here are a few quick shots from last week, in which I felt a little like a sunflower thanks to the yellow-on-top, green(ish)-on-the-bottom color scheme. At this point in the afternoon, things were pretty wrinkly from sitting at my desk all day -- but, that's real life: sometimes, your linen skirt wrinkles, and sometimes, you take blog pictures next to an abandoned spoon. C'est la vie!

All I wanna do

hat: urban outfitter // scarf: h&m // chambray: f21 // sweater: h&m via thrift, CA // skinnies: f21 // shoes: thrifted, CO // bracelet: thrifted

At any given moment, odds are I am wearing some version of this outfit (see here and here for proof). This is one of those looks that feels just so perfectly me, but with some newer additions than I wouldn't have worn at earlier points in my life (hat! layering!). I was a jeans and t-shirt person for a long time and that was it -- no dresses or skirts, ever. While I'm glad I've expanded my wardrobe in the last year or so, when left to my own devices I find I always come back to something basic along these sartorial lines. Basically, what I'm saying is, all I wanna do is wear this outfit (and watch a great 90s' movie with the same title as this post). What about you? What styles or shapes do you tend to fall back on year after year?

Office LBD

dress: gap // button-down: urban outfitters // necklace: f21 // tights: gap // boots: gap via thrift, CA // coat: h&m

I know I'm a New Englander and everything, but it's been kind of cold lately? Or maybe I have just totally lost my tolerance for winter -- which will work out great, since I'm moving to Maine in February. It's also been surprisingly dry, which has made my hair... interesting (read: horrible). Given all those factors, plus the fact that I threw this on yesterday morning after a weekend in Vegas, I think this is actually a pretty good look. That's the great thing about black dresses -- throw 'em on over whatever and you almost always have a wearable outfit (I guess this is why all those magazines always told me to buy an LBD, huh?). Since I was working in the office, I figured I'd aim for "young professional" and not "really tired from dancing and drinking all weekend." How'd I do?

Wind + hat

hat, shirt, necklace, belt, skirt, shoes: thrifted, CA // tights: macy's // wallet: target

Yikes -- it's been a little quiet here lately, team! Sorry about that. And, in the interest of full disclosure I should tell you that wore this last week and it was actually outfit number three of this thirty, not two. Don't be mad! Between adjusting to my camera-man's new schedule and my trip this weekend, I'm afraid I've fallen way, way behind (in documenting my outfits -- not in getting dressed. Don't worry -- Vegas wasn't that crazy).

I generally to shy away from completely thrifted outfits, but I'd like to think this one looks pretty put together. I find it's pretty hard to go wrong with a striped shirt; it's one of my go-to pieces on days when I just can't figure out what to wear. Unfortunately, it was not the day to sport a flouncy skirt and big hat -- the wind was brutal and I'm actually amazed we ended up with any usable shots!

As for the hat: I don't wear them regularly, though I've recently somehow amassed an impressive collection. I'm trying to make my way through them as I determine which ones are worth shipping to the East coast and which ones are headed (back) to Goodwill. I must say, even though I felt silly in it, I think this one's a keeper. Yay or nay?

Karma vs. prowess

boots: steve madden via macy's // skirt: thrifted, CA // shirt: thrifted, CA // belt: thrifted, VT // necklace: f21 // circle scarf: h&m

Slightly delayed, but here's my first look for my 30-30-30 (I actually wore this on Tuesday; have to keep things honest on the ol' blog). I loved wearing this, mainly because I absolutely love this skirt. I found it while on a thrift hunt a few weeks ago in which I was looking for one exactly like this -- that never happens! Before we left, I announced to my friend and co-thrifter that I was seeking a perfect pink pencil skirt, and lo and below, this beauty appeared. Granted, she was about 6 inches too long and tiiiiny, but I got it hemmed (and just squeeze myself into it whenever I wear it). My friends say I have good karma for thrift shopping -- I call that thrifting prowess. (Or maybe it's just because I go so often.)

Winter 2013 30-30-30 Challenge

For me, post-holidays January usually is a time of cutting back from all the gluttony of December. No more cookie exchanges, no more vacations from work, no more pigging out at every meal (well... no promises on that one). In this spirit, I've decided to do Kendi's 30-30-30 challenge with some (blogless) friends -- you know the one: 30 pieces of clothing, 30 outfits, 30 days -- and no shopping. I confess that it might take me a little longer due to a quick trip to Vegas this weekend to celebrate a dear friend's birthday. What was I saying about January's lack of excess?

I've done the 30-30-30 challenge a few times this past year, and I love how it forces me to be creative with what I've got instead of buying more, which is especially important since we are moving soon and I really, really need to start focusing on having less. If you're interested in participating, take the plunge! And, if you have a blog, let me know in the comments -- I'd love to see your looks.

I should come clean and say that I started yesterday; I owe some outfit posts -- coming soon, I promise! In the mean time, here's a quick, inexact approximation of my items:

jan-feb 30-30-30 by lebvs

And here's what's actually in my 30:
five shirts: gray t: gap // purple tank blouse: UO // lace tank: zara // navy t: thrifted, CA // navy, green and white blouse: h&m in amsterdam
four longsleeves: white and navy stripes: h&m via thrift CA // black turtleneck: f21 // chambray: f21 // white button-up with black polka dots: UO
six sweaters: yellow cardigan: express (gift, thanks ma!) // cream open knit cardigan: UO // gray shortsleeve sweater: bcbg via thrift, CA // cream sweater: h&m via thrift, CA // navy cardigan: banana republic outlet // gray jacket: banana republic
four skirts: navy skirt: jcrew via thrift, CA // pinkish purple pencil: thrifted, CA // sequin mini: thrifted, CA // turquoise pencil: thrifted, CA
two pants: denim highwaisted skinnies: ambiance // rust skinnies: f21
three dresses: red and blue: ralph lauren via macy's // pinkish lace: UO // black: gap
five shoes: leather boots: macy's // black riding boots: gap via thrift, CA / red wedges: payless // brown loafers: thrifted, CO // black booties: gap via thrift, CA

If you're good at math, you'll notice that my list only adds up to 29 items. I'm stuck on my last pick -- should I go with my gray heels or a cherry red shirt? Let me know in the comments! (And apologies for the uggo indoor photo; the rain got the best of me today.)

That 70's Sunday

wedges: asos, last year // pants: zara // t-shirt: gap // cardigan: jcrew via thrift, CA // scarf: ?? // bag: thrifted, CA //
belt: thrifted, VT // bracelets: cute store in downtown iowa

Wide-leg jeans and burnt reddish-orange can really only mean one thing: I'm having a little 70's love affair. I've actually been on the lookout for some vintage high-waist wide-leg jeans since forever, but they are an elusive thrift store goal. These Zara ones will have to do until I find my dream pair -- I got these last year and haven't worn them much, but they fit a little differently than they used to and I like them much more than I remembered. Deep thoughts today on Fifth Freedom Fashion -- you're welcome!

Bang, bang!

boots: gap via thrift, CA // socks: h&m, old // skinnies: ambiance // topaz dolman shirt: f21 // belt: coach via goodwill, CA
open knit cardigan: urban outfitters // necklace: f21 // bag: thrifted, ME

It's confession time again: I gave myself a haircut yesterday, which I guess sort of supports my new years resolution to "get more haircuts," if you ignore the part that stipulated that they be from a professional. But I didn't even really have bangs anymore, I just had... messy hair, growing out of the front of my head. It was out of control, so I hacked at it for awhile and I'm pretty pleased with the results. (At least in the front. The back is another story.)

I wore this today for some quality sister time (aka: eating things) and to play with my little tatertot niece, who is almost two years old and utterly, completely adorable. I'm proud to say that she's mastered all the important words: "uh oh," "mama," "eat" and "up!" Seriously, what else do you need? I had to hide this necklace beneath a scarf for most of the visit, since she is also quite the fashionista and very, very into grabbing.
